Growth charts

At her 2 month checkup, Monster Hands came in at just under the 5th percentile for weight-for-age. It was a big deal because she was so small at birth and immediately thereafter that they worried that she wasn’t eating enough. This week, at her 4 month checkup, she came in at the 11th percentile for weight. (This is all according to a WHO standard chart.)

The doctor joked that she was now bigger than I was, percentile-wise.

That made me curious about whether anyone actually had bothered to gather weight-for-age percentile data for adults and whether she actually had surpassed me. Guess what? The CDC has gathered it (for the US, not the world) and she HAS surpassed me! She and I had very similar weight and height for age percentiles when she was 2 months old and she’s ahead now. I’m not sure what we’re racing for or what it means to win, and I still think the lesson is that healthy humans come in all sizes, but this is sort of entertaining.
